Galtür with the Alpinarium – a unique excursion destination

The Alpinarium Galtür is an exhibition house of a special kind and a central part of the 345 metre long and 19 metre-high protective wall. The combination of protective wall and exhibition space makes the Alpinarium Galtür and its architecture unique in Europe.

The nomination for the 2007 European Museum Award and the distinction with the Austrian seal of quality for museums in 2008 emphasise the quality of the site.

Exhibition “LIFE ON THE MOUNTAIN – Fascination Snow – Myth Avalanche”

In the exhibition, you find out how mountains - those seemingly bare rocks - live and what life is like in them. Mountains as a challenge to people, people and animals under pressure to adapt. But mountains also as the rootstock of myths and fairy tales, as a place to recharge with peace and strength.

NEW – Pictures in Motion

The alpine specialist and director Lutz Maurer outlines in his documentary how the event of 23rd February 1999 changed Galtür and its people.

The subject “Fascination Snow – Myth Avalanche” also features in the presentation of the other exhibition spaces. New light is cast upon the formation of these threatening masses of snow, how people protect themselves from them, and survival in an avalanche, but also the view into history. You look from our rooftop observation platform onto a 360 degree panorama that includes Galtür and the mountains all around. Gorfen and Ballunspitze seem close enough to touch. From the roof catwalk, you can see the imposing construction “the Wall” in its full size.

Cafe “gefrorenes Wasser”

After visiting the exhibitions, allow yourself to be spoilt in our cafe “gefrorenes Wasser” (“frozen water”) and on the panoramic sun terrace, with specialities from the culinary region that produces “Paznaun alpine cheese”. Enjoy the view into the impressive mountain world of the Silvretta. There is a reduced admission price for the exhibition if you have the toll card of the Silvretta-Hochalpenstrasse or the Montafon card.
