Innkeeper Fredi: An outdoorsman with depth
Fredi Immler took over the Neue Heilbronner Chalet over 40 years ago. And then never left. The mountains have become an addiction for the innkeeper. “Living up there is still something very special after all this time. When I get up in the morning and see the mountains, I always have the same thought: I am so lucky to be here. It’s almost like an addiction,” says the 70-year-old.
He is there every year from June to October. His time in the chalet not only pays the bills but is also his passion. One that is carried on by the family. “Our children grew up in the Heilbronner Chalet and had a fantastic play area in front of the building in the great outdoors.” The next generation is already on the starting blocks in the form of his daughter Olivia. The 36-year-old will take over management of the chalet in 2019.
Fredi travels to the valley to shop twice a week. Otherwise, he is always at 2,320 metres above sea level. “The guests look for and need contact with the innkeeper,” is the simple justification. He is the first one up in the morning and provides his guests not only with breakfast but also with the weather forecast and other useful information for the hike or bike tour. And if someone has sat too intensely in the evening, Fredi is never at loss for a cautionary word. “Anyone who heads for the mountains must never forget respect,” as he knows from many years of experience.
The “chalet” fascination begins long before the start of the season. “I generally feel it start itching in the spring.” Some ski tours happen to go right past the Heilbronner Chalet. “Ga luaga go” (going to take a look) is how Fredi describes his attempts at shrugging off the homesickness for his chalet.
The mountains, Fredi Immler says, are not only a big topic for himself. “In times like these, the desire for simplicity is growing.” People, including the young, want to return to the natural and the authentic. “Mountains are in,” he says, summing things up. And they do good. The occasional “rucksack” has been left behind at the chalet. He didn’t celebrate his 40th anniversary at the chalet in any great style. “When I get to be in the mountains, I have a party the whole year round.” It’s not only due to his outer appearance that this statement from this personified outdoorsman is so believable. Nature and people have a very close connection in the Montafon. Fredi is the best example of that.
