Tour description

The Kleinlitzner via ferrata leads through a high-alpine landscape to the 2,783-meter-high Kleinlitzner and is considered the first via ferrata in the Montafon. The route is short, but should not be underestimated due to the altitude and the alpine terrain.

Above the Saarbrücker Hütte, you’ll reach the scenic summit via a rocky gully, dirt ramps, steeper ascents, and short walking sections. The difficulty level is mostly in the A/B range, with one key section rated C. Continuous steel cables and footholds provide support on the steeper sections.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the rugged rocky landscape of the Silvretta and the surrounding three-thousand-meter peaks. Precisely because of the high-alpine location, you should carefully check the weather, snow conditions, and terrain in advance.

Directions

Next to the Saarbrücker Hut (2,538 m) rises the rock formation of Kleinlitzner. This mountain offers an ideal base for all via ferrata climbers and alpine climbers. The start of the via ferrata begins about 350 m away from the hut and is easily reachable.

The descent is on the same path. That is, you have to climb down the via ferrata again to return to the Saarbrücker Hut.

Equipment

Complete climbing equipment (harness including via ferrata set, helmet, and gloves) as well as proper footwear (sturdy ankle-high mountain boots with a good tread) are absolutely necessary.

You should also always carry a backpack with provisions, sun and rain protection, and a first aid kit.

Tips

To shorten the approach to the Saarbrücker Hut, a ride with the (e-)mountain bike is recommended.

Access

The Kleinlitzner rock formation rises directly behind the Saarbrücker Hütte. The start of the via ferrata is located about 350 meters south of the hut and is easily accessible.

Route Description

The via ferrata leads through high-alpine terrain to the 2,783-meter-high Kleinlitzner. You’ll ascend toward the summit via a rocky gully, short walking sections, and easy climbing sections. The difficulty is mostly in the A/B range, with the crux section reaching difficulty level C. Continuous steel cables and footholds provide support on the steeper sections.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Silvretta and the surrounding three-thousand-meter peaks.

Descent

The descent to the Saarbrücker Hut follows the same route as the ascent. Please be prepared for oncoming traffic on the via ferrata and show due consideration.

Getting to the starting point

Due to the long-term closure of the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße, the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe is currently accessible only via the Vermuntbahn and the tunnel bus. We therefore recommend using the Vermuntbahn’s valley station in Partenen as your starting point. Please check the current operating hours.

From Partenen, take the Vermuntbahn uphill and then continue on the tunnel bus to Vermuntsee. From there, it’s about a 2.5-hour walk to the Saarbrücker Hütte.

By public transportation

The Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses connect the towns regularly, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find suitable connections in the cleVVVer mobil schedule app.

Bus stop for the start and end of this tour: Partenen Bergbahnen.

By car

Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit. Then follow the Montafonerstraße L188 to Partenen. Parking is available at the Vermuntbahn and Tafamuntbahn stations.

Important Information

This via ferrata is inspected regularly but does not have an official opening or closing status. The listed season is provided solely as a guide.

You climb at your own risk and are solely responsible for your actions. Please check the weather, current conditions, snow conditions, and difficulty level before every climb. Especially during transitional seasons like spring and fall, snow, ice, wet conditions, or sudden weather changes can make the climb significantly more difficult or even impossible.

Realistically assess your experience, surefootedness, ability to handle heights, and physical fitness. Complete, standard-compliant via ferrata equipment is absolutely essential. This includes a hip belt, via ferrata set, helmet, and gloves. Equally important are sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good traction.

Your backpack should also include plenty of food, sun and rain protection, and a first-aid kit.

In the Montafon, you can rent high-quality via ferrata equipment at select sports shops. Please check in advance regarding availability, sizes, and reservation options.

Useful tips

The Saarbrücker Hütte is ideal for a break or as a base for an overnight stay before or after your hike. Especially for longer hikes in the Litzner area, it’s worth planning enough time to fully enjoy the high-alpine atmosphere of the Silvretta. Please check in advance for opening hours, availability, and reservation options. You should book your overnight stay well in advance—https://saarbrueckerhuette.at/.
